Diesel Cars Coming To Prominence In India

    -
There has always been serious competition between petrol and diesel cars in India to gain higher market share. The difference in price of these fuels have been major drivers to this competition and the last few years have witnessed ups and downs in sale of diesel and petrol cars like never before because of frequent change in prices of diesel and petrol. Ask analysts in the market as to what cars are more profitable and the reply from each person will be different due to different approaches followed for analysis. Whatever the results may be, but the fact is that cars with diesel engines generally provide greater mileage than cars which have similar sized petrol engine. Although the maintenance cost for diesel cars are high, on a long-run these cars are more profitable compared to petrol models. This has been one of the primary reasons why automobile companies are coming up with new diesel engines for Indian market. The trend has changed in the last 5-8 years and diesel engines have crept into entry-level sedans and hatchbacks and have brought a shift in market share. Having a diesel engine for a particular car has turned out to be an added advantage and sometimes it has been a mandatory requirement for auto marques to compete with rivals effectively.

Hatchbacks which have dominated the car market in India mostly had petrol engines few years ago. With increase in competition and depreciation in buyer sentiments towards mini cars, automobile makers are coming out with diesel powered hatchbacks to battle it out in the market. Not only the hatchbacks, but entry-level sedans and MUVs too are betting on diesel engines for their success in India. One of the best examples has been Honda Amaze which was aggressively marketed with its 25 kmpl diesel mill. After the Amaze, most recently the launch of Hyundai’s diesel hatchback Grand i10 and probable launch of diesel version of Wagon R have also gained lot of attention in India. These changes in the entry-level segment do show a shift in phase and indicate the thirst for innovation and dedication to offer something new to consumers among all automobile makers.

Some of the best selling hatchbacks of each automobile company today have both petrol and diesel engines. Be it the 1.3L DDiS mill of the Maruti Suzuki Swift, the 1L Smartech engine of Chevrolet Beat or 1.4L engine Tata Indica eV2, all of these have undoubtedly impressed consumers for their performance and functionality. These hatchbacks are also among the best sellers for the company from their respective portfolios. While these companies had their share from diesel models, Honda was late in introducing their diesel car in India. Stepping into entry-level sedan segment in style, the Japanese car maker leaped ahead with the launch of its 1.5L diesel mill which has been developed from Earth Dreams technology. Honda has worked on reducing friction within engine cylinder and in developing better cooling mechanism such that the efficiency and power delivery is boosted in the engine.

With diesel powertrains getting closer to entry-level hatchback segment auto majors are intensively working on developing powertrains for these cars. One of the best-selling hatchbacks for MSIL, the WagonR and the cheapest mini-car in India-Tata Nano are expected to come out with diesel engines in near future.
