Donating is probably the most commercial form of charity in Australia. As a country they have over 4.6 million tax payers, and a percentage of their tax can go towards the less fortunate. It has a great and simple system; the person donating chooses a charity; makes a donation and they are sent a receipt. They are also able to get a tax reduction because they are donating to charity. The money is used freely and on what they feel will benefit them the most.
The other method is to directly donate, but if it is a large sum the donor won’t be able to decide where the funds will be going. Individual donations generally are not large; recipient charities do not have access to track the person that made the deposit to them unless they are very big. How to choose a charity? There are multiple motivators here. What is your passion? What is your strongest feeling about? What problem would you want to fix - or would you help? Think also whether any geographic basis is given. Would you prefer to donate to a place that you know of? Maybe a place you grow up near? You can give it to people in rural areas of Australia or to a big foundation. Direct donations are great because you know where it is going and can ask what they want to spend it on.
Foundations are also great resources for donors, businesses or any foundation wanting to assist with community projects, instead of a normal donation. They are great if the person donating wants to work on a certain geographic area. Charities receive multiple requests for funding them, so some donors get together and share these projects if they are unable to fund their smaller amount on their own. By getting together with worthy people they are able to start the project because all their amounts total the requested amount.

This choice is great if you want to assist them without getting involved. Many people just do not have the time to physically get involved so a quick donation goes a long way.
