Visit The Oldest Fort Of India: Kangra Fort

This legendary place is publically renowned as the Kangra Fort, which we can visit during Himachal tour. The fort is beautifully positioned in the Kangra Valley. It is most reachable from the Dharamshala that is 20 kilometers away from Fort. The township of Dharamshala is known to be the most accessible outskirts region from the town of Kangra, India. In the rich and historic past of India, this prestigious fort of Kangra was initially got mentioned in Alexander the Great War records that are referring to the 4th century BC. It is believed that the Fort was actually engineered by the ancestors of Royal dynasty of Kangra Valley i.e. The Katoch family. The origin of this family was actually belongs to the traditional Trigarta Kingdom, which was earlier mentioned within the Mahabharata epic.

This grand fort of Kangra is the regarded as the largest fort in located in the Himalayas. Being the largest fort it is probably the oldest fort currently present in India. If talking about the magnificent architecture of fort, then the design of the fort is undoubtedly excellent. The entrance to the fort is leading through a small courtyard that is beautifully enclosed between two gates. The actual positioning of the fort is placed at the pouring Banganga River. This divine Banganga River is flowing deep in the valley forming a formidable sheer and the Kangra Fort lurking atop the flat mountain range. While, looking out for the view from the fort then you will be literally capturing the simply spectacular sceneries of nature. If you love nature then itís a treat to watch such encounters that you can capture forever. This fort is acknowledged to be part of great architectural achievement and rich history of India. This fort had already witnessed many civilizations from here. In order to witness the grand fort of Kangra, the nearest city one can approach is Nagarkot. This city is located near about 3 kilometres away from the Kangra Valley.

Being to Kangra fort is a dream for every history researcher and mostly the nature lover. Thatís why this place counts as one of the most sought after destination of Himachal. While planning to visit Kangra, you simply cannot afford to miss to this fort. Though, at the times of British Raj, The Kangra fort was literally kept neglected. As, a consequence it has seen much degradation in its massive territory of fort. But, immediately after the Indian independence with the help of Archaeological department things are working in its favour and things are now under control.

While travelling during Himachal tour, one can easily reach Kangra fort by any mode of transportation i.e. road, rail & air. To connect this place more easily from Kangra is first you visit Dharamshala i.e. 17 km away from it. Otherwise from the city of Shimla it is 220 km away and 235 km away from Chandigarh. So, pick any of the routes as per your convenience.
