Types Of Security Alarm Equipment For Your Home

A study by Rutgers University found that for each home an alarm system was installed at in a neighborhood, overall crime decreased. This means that if each and every home has an alarm system the national home burglary rate would significantly decrease. Now is the time to learn about home alarm systems and protect your home before you are the last one on the block without protection and vulnerable to burglaries. What keeps most people from purchasing an alarm system is lack of knowledge. Knowing the basic components of an alarm system will help make the task less daunting and help you get the protection you need.
The first thing you need to know is the types of products used. Most alarm companies will offer you a basic system consisting of a keypad, panel, contacts, motion detector and key fob remote. The keypad will be installed by your main entry point to allow you to easily arm and disarm the system as you entry and exit your home. The panel is simply the central brain of the system receving and sending signals between the devices and the monitoring station. The contacts are small magnets that are attached to doors and windows and when the alarm is set and their magnetic pull is broken they will send a signal that a problem has occurred. The motion detector does as it name implies. When the alarm is turned on it will pick up motion within the room alerting the system of the event. A key fob remote is a remote device similar to a cars key fob that allows you to turn on and off your system remotely. This allows you to turn off your system as you’re exiting your car and not have to worry about entering a code into the keypad.
The second thing you should consider is if you want to add special equipment to your basic package. Some additional options are glass break detectors, monitored smoke alarms, carbon dioxide detectors, water detectors, medical alert system, phone tamper devices, and cellular device. Glass break detectors can detect the shattering sound of glass for about 50 feet. This prevents burglars from bypassing contacts if they attempt to say throw a rock through your back door. Monitored smoke alarms will detect smoke and fire within a home and will alert the central station that the fire department needs to be contacted immediately. A monitored smoke alarm saves lives and homes. A carbon dioxide detector works similar to a smoke alarm and it alerts the central station when it detects carbon dioxide in the home. A water detector is also a similar device alerting the central station when it detects a flood or water break. This device is important to have near water heaters and washing machines. For someone with medical concerns a two-way voice board in conjunction with a medical pendant and/or wall button can provide assistance in a medical emergency. Phone tamper is a small device attached to the phone lines that alerts the central station if burglars attempt to cut the phone lines. However, the absolute best way to keep your alarm safe is through a cellular device. A cellular device acts as a cell phone for the home. Its lines can never be cut and it rarely is affected by weather.
Now that you some about the components of an alarm system talking terminology with a sales representative will be a piece of cake. In fact, now that you know the lingo you should be able to help customize a security package tailored to your home and families specific needs. Knowing what your home needs to be fully secure will allow you to negotiate a good price for your customized package. Now all you need to do is pick up the phone and be the next one on your block preventing crime.
