Know About Fatal Club Drugs

Club drugs are psychoactive compounds that are abused by teens and young adults at night clubs, raves or trance scenes. These drugs became popular first in UK in 1970. According to MTF survey 2007, 0.7% students abused GHB, 1% abused Ketamine, and 0.5% students abused Rohypnol in the eighth standard. Some club drugs are approved by FDA for medical use and some are not. Abuse of these drugs can affect health and, adverse effects are seen.

Different types of club drugs
Gamma hydroxybutyrate (GHB), Rohypnol, Ketamine are a few types of club drugs. These drugs are central nervous system depressants. They are often colorless, tasteless, and odorless.

* GHB: Since 1990, this drug was abused in U.S. for body building. But in 2002, FDA approved this drug for medical use, to treat sleep disorders. Patients who use this drug are monitored by FDA.

* Rohypnol: Abuse of this drug started in early 1990’s and not approved for any medical use. This drug is also knows as ‘drug rape’, harm the abusers and prevent them from resisting sexual assault.

* Ketamine: This drug is an anesthetic, approved for medical use of both human and animal in 1990’s. Behavior of Ketamine abuser is similar to Cocaine or PCP abuser.

How they are abused?

People who attend rave or trance may not use drugs but becomes attracted to the club drugs. Its low cost, ability to increase energy levels, and its deepening experience of rave or trance are few reasons for club drugs abuse. Rohypnol is taken orally or snorted. GHB and Rohypnol are added to beverages or mixed with drugs. GHB and Ketamine are snorted or injected.

Effects of Club drugs

Abuse of club drugs can cause serious health problems, especially when uses with combination of other drugs. GHB has very serious effects on health of the abuser. The following are effects of abusing club drugs.

* Short term effects: Abuser experience nausea, drowsiness, respiratory distress, dizziness, seizures and amnesia are few short term effects with GHB abuse. Ketamine abuse can inadvertently cause an injury and creates dream-like states or hallucinations to the abuser. Abusers of Rohypnol mayn’t remember events that are experienced by them under effect of drug.

* Long term effects: High dose of GHB can be poisonous and death results in minutes. Coma and seizures can occur with the abuse. Ketamine abuse effects the functioning of liver and can also lead to liver failure. High dose of Ketamine can cause impaired motor function, high blood pressure, fatal respiratory problems and many more. With Rohypnol abuse, respiratory depression, aspiration or even death of the abuser is observed.

The above information gives you a snapshot about the club drugs, types, reasons for abuse and effects of abuse. This information also indicates that some club drugs are just bad as any other drug. Proper treatment options are available to overcome abuse of club drugs.
